Meet Allison, a founding member of HTC

I have always loved music, especially musical theatre. Although I have no experience of playing instruments or reading music I love to sing.

After joining a community choir at Harrogate Theatre several years ago, a few members decided that we wanted to keep the choir going, and I became the treasurer for the newly formed Harrogate Theatre Choir (HTC). HTC is over 10 years old now and I have had a great time, and met some amazing and talented people.

Although I still cannot read music, I have learnt a lot. With the help of recordings to help our practise, I can follow written music much easier now. I am becoming bolder in my singing and, who knows, maybe I won’t be a chorus girl for ever!

In the summer I was at a wedding and both the hymns chosen were particular favourites of mine. I sang out with gusto. The lady next to me kept stopping, and my immediate thoughts were that I must be singing it wrong, but when the service had finished she turned to me and said  I sounded really good and wanted to listen to me. Thank you to our Musical Director Catherine!

Apart from being a choir member, I am a swimming instructor with Starbeck Centenary Swimming Club. I was also the Head Caterer for St Aidans School for 13 years, and I therefore meet lots of kids who are all now grown up and remember me as their dinner lady or swimming teacher, how ageing is that!   I now work in the family property business but retirement is on the horizon.  My other hobbies include Zumba, swimming and cycling. My partner, Chris, and I are now empty nesters with both our boys making their own stories. So, having lived in Germany and Spain, Chris and I plan to see more of the world and travel a bit further afield.
