Everyone knows that singing is a great way to relax, to de-stress and also to meet new people. If you’re looking to join a singing group, then Harrogate Theatre Choir is a friendly, enthusiastic and ambitious mixed-voice choir of around 50 singers.  Our ages range from 18 – 90+ and we welcome singers from all walks of life.

Under the guidance of our brilliant Musical Director, Catherine Field-Leather, we are encouraged to perform to a high standard, but we also sing in a supportive, enjoyable and good-humoured environment. Our repertoire consists mainly of songs from the stage and screen, all sung in lovely rich harmonies.  Many of our songs are 4-part SATB arrangements, but we all relish a vocal challenge and often perform 6 and 8-part arrangements.

Does Harrogate Theatre Choir perform at concerts?

Yes, we usually host 2 or 3 concerts of our own and members are expected, as far as possible, to sing in all the performances.  We take bookings for private functions at certain times of the year and also perform at a number of community events, especially around Christmas.  Why not come along to one of our future performances?

Will I have to audition?

Our Musical Director will want to be sure that HTC is the right choir for you and will assess your musical range on a 1 to 1 basis.  This ensures that a balance is maintained across the voice parts, and that, as a full choir, we achieve a blended sound.  Auditions are definitely not about finding the most experienced singers but to look for individuals who simply love music and want to learn and perform.

Does it matter if I can’t read music?

No, our members have a range of musical knowledge and experience. It may be an advantage if you can read music, but it is certainly not essential.

When and where do you rehearse?

Rehearsals generally follow the pattern of school terms.  We rehearse on Thursday evenings, from 7.30 pm to 9.15 pm at The Wesley Centre, Oxford Street, Harrogate.

We expect members to attend at least 75% of rehearsals throughout the year. Members are also expected to do some practise at home. This allows us to move forward learning new pieces at a reasonable speed. If you enjoy the social side of being in a choir, quite a few members usually head to the local pub after rehearsals!

Do you have any vacancies?

We occasionally have vacancies but Harrogate Theatre Choir maintains a healthy waiting list most of the time. However, we welcome enquiries from potential members throughout the year.

How do I find out more?

Initially, please contact our secretary, Jean Mills, on htcsecretary17@gmail.com.  In your email it’s helpful if you can set out any previous singing experience, and also indicate which section you feel best suits your voice.

What are the costs?

Membership fees are paid each term and we believe they are very reasonable. These cover the cost of printed music, Musical Director’s fees, hire of hall, hire of performance venues etc.  Further details will be provided when applying.
